The story is set in early California when it was ruled by the Spaniards. A red-headed girl becomes good friends with Tomás, an Indian boy who has been mistreated by her father. The friendship lasts through the years. He helps and defends her throughout. The book is about ranch life, love, wisdom and times from long ago.
