An elaborate doll house is shipped overseas as a gift--but a terrible storm causes the package to be lost and it washes ashore on an uninhabited tropical island, where the Doll family (able to move when no human eyes are upon them) struggle to reunite. There is Mr. Doll, who is left slightly cracked by the shipwreck; Mrs. Doll, who has a detachable wig and lives in fear of something getting inside her head; and their children William and Annabelle.
The imagery of the island setting includes beautiful descriptions of tropical plant and animal life and provides an unfamiliar home to which the dolls must adapt. The sketches and writing by Mr. Doll himself are charming and the dolls create ingenious ways to solve problems. An adorable little story.
