This is a charming folktale about the children who went to Krakow on Christmas Eve to present their Szopka Krakowska (puppet show). Though disappointed when their performance was interrupted, in the square, they had the wonderful experience of giving their Christmas puppet show before a real audience when a famous puppeteer does not appear.
How the children participated in a re-enacting of a real nativity story of their own makes this a tender and moving tale full of the real spirit of Christmas which all children love. Poland, a land filled with poetry and legend, is the setting of this famous Christmas story to which the Petershams' beautiful illustrations in color bring a new interpretation.
