The time is 1689 -- the setting Maine. The story tells of Seth Hinton, captured in an Indian raid, and of his years living with the Indians, coming to love an English maid who had virtually ""gone Indian"", and of encounters with other captives, some bound on escape, no matter what the cost, others willing to accept slavery to the French-Canadians as a safer way out. It pictures a different sort of Indian life and viewpoint from the one usually encountered, and is a definite contribution to the background information on Colonial days.
