Lydia was born in 1654, just outside the gates of New Amsterdam (New York) at a time when the fear of an English invasion was everywhere. On the day she was born her father planted a little pear tree in the orchard. As she grows, so grows the tree, and when it bears fruit, Lydia does a remarkable thing.
