Bambi
Bambi's life in the woods begins happily. There are forest animals to play with -- Friend Hare, the chattery squirrel, the noisy screech owl, and Bambi's twin cousins, frail Gobo and beautiful Faline. But winter comes, and Bambi learns that the woods hold danger -- and things he doesn't understand. The first snowfall makes food hard to find. Bambi's father, a handsome stag, roams the forest, but leaves Bambi and his mother alone. Then there is Man. He comes to the forest with weapons that can wound an animal. He does terrible things to Gobo, to Bambi's mother, and even to Bambi. But he can't keep Bambi from growing into a handsome stag himself, and becoming...the Prince of the Forest.

Rascal
Skunks, woodchucks, a crow named Poe, an absentminded father, and an 18-foot, half-finished canoe filling the living room—welcome to the North home! Rascal is only a baby when Sterling brings him home to join the menagerie. But soon the mischievous raccoon is ready to join Sterling in swimming, fishing, and camping excursions. They're partners and best friends for a year of adventure—until the spring day when suddenly everything changes.

Lassie Come-Home
Lassie is Joe's prize collie and constant companion. But when Joe's father loses his job, Lassie must be sold. Three times she escapes from her new owner, and three times she returns home to Joe, until finally she is taken to the remotest part of Scotland--too far a journey for any dog to make alone . . . But Lassie is not just any dog.

The Black Stallion
When the steamer Drake is shipwrecked off the Spanish coast, there are only two survivors. One is young Alec Ramsay. The other is the Black Stallion--wildest of all creatures--who saves Alec's life. Stranded on a desert island, boy and stallion develop a deep and special bond. The Black is the horse Alec has always dreamed of: beautiful, savage, and majestic. Alec is determined to tame him. But the job turns out to be more difficult and dangerous than he ever imagined.

Lad: A Dog
A collection of immensely popular magazine stories. The hero is an extraordinary collie named Lad, "a thoroughbred in spirit as well as in blood." In each tale, Lad exhibits his pure strength of character as he fights off burglars, rescues an invalid child from a poisonous snake, wins ribbons in dog shows, and otherwise leads a dog-hero's life.
