"The land God forgot" -- Lapland-- along with a good deal of indigenous background detail frames a straightforward story of a boy's attempt to retrieve his father's reindeer. After Jouni Sarris is badly burned in a fire, the bill of sale for thirty of his herd is changed to read three hundred which would strip him entirely, and a "man without reindeer might as well lie down and die" in this part of the world.
Johani, his sixteen year old son, with the help of an old man and in spite of the hindrance of the local law, Sgt. Peakski, is instrumental in seeing that justice rather than revenge is accomplished, ultimately through the court.
