The book utilizes an engaging narrative style to introduce elementary aged children to explorers from BC to AD. The first explorer in the book is Hanno, from Carthage, who sailed a long way down the coast of Africa, but never made it to the tip.

After him came centuries of explorers who continued to push further South looking for a sea route to the Far East. Along the way we meet Alexander the Great, Prince Henry the Navigator, Dias, Vasco De Gama, Columbus, etc. We end with Magellan.

The book has many illustrations. Each chapter has a 2 page color spread with several black and white illustrations, several of which are drawings of what the map looked like in various time periods as explorers added pieces to it little by little. With Magellan's crew sailing around the world, most of the major land forms could finally be placed in their proper places for the most accurate map up to that time.

This book does not delve into the science of cartography. It's a book of mini-biographies. The book is a great place to start learning about explorers or as an overview of the subject.
