A novel based on the life of Mrs. Robert E. Lee. Harnett Kane wrote this historical fiction piece based on autobiographies of Lee family members, Lee family papers and interviews with Mrs. Mary Custis Lee's descendents. The book shines a light into the thoughts of Mrs. Lee as well as her personal character, which was admired by people in both the South and North.

Mary Custis lived in and inherited the estate that is now the site of Arlington Cemetery. She fell in love with and married Robert E. Lee, a distant cousin. The book follows their story as Robert earned his reputation in the American military and later became internationally famous as a great general in the Confederate Army. Mary suffered personal losses as a result of his decision to join the Confederate cause, including having to abandon forever her family's mansion.
