A boyhood in the west of England: On a lovely June day in 1918, a little boy was standing all alone, lost, among grass which towered menacingly above his head. He was surrounded by sights he had never seen before, crushed by experiences too strong for him to cope with.
This wonderful book describes rural/poor life in the Cotswolds England prior to industrialization. The author is a poet, and describes in prose his family, especially his mother, his village and its characters. He evokes clearly an earlier age before motor cars and the world at large intrude.
