This book is set in the Netherlands during an earlier time period when life was simpler. It is the touching story of a little boy named Davie, who is recovering from a serious illness. He is so excited when he learns that his Grandfather is getting him a little black rabbit. Davie's world begins to revolve around the rabbit during the long week he must wait for the rabbit to be delivered by wagon to his small village. Every waking moment is spent in anticipation of the rabbit he is going to name Shadrach.
This story gives us a realistic look of the excitement and innocence of a young child who's life centers around a precious pet. We see the love and concern of his family for a fragile child, and feel the love he has for his mother, dad, grandfather, and grandmother, and bother, and his obsession with Shadrach. Davey must find a way to care for Shadrach when he begins to lose weight and grow thin. The touching climax comes when Shadrach goes missing and Davey must find him or be consumed by the illness that is draining the life from his fragile body.
