This is the story of Mary Stuart, daughter of James II of England, who made an arranged marriage with William of Orange, her Dutch cousin. When learning of the arrangement at age 15, Mary is dismayed and schemes to avoid the marriage by making herself appear ugly when meeting William for the first time. However, the marriage takes place and William and Mary return to Holland.

As Mary grows to know William, she finds that she admires him and grows to love him and the Dutch people. Later she is recalled to serve as Queen of England, and she and William sadly leave Holland. This is a beautifully written love story that will also bring to life the politics and events of the time, as seen through the eyes of a young girl, a princess and political pawn, an unwilling wife, and finally, a woman grown.
