The stove was the work of Augustin Hirschvogel, the potter of Nurnberg, and to little August, a young Tyrolean boy, it was the most beautiful thing in the world. That is why when it was sold he made that venturesome journey, three days hidden in its great heart.

August is devastated when his father sells the family's magnificent stove in order to pay debts and buy food, manages to journey as a stowaway with the stove to its new owner.
