The day after Fairacre School closes for the summer holidays, Miss Read falls down the stairs and breaks her arm. Meanwhile, her friend, Amy Garfield, is having marital problems. Ready for a change, the two friends decide to go away for a two-week stay on the island of Crete, a tranquil break that refreshes them both, and leaves them ready to tackle problems at home.
