The outside world is slowly invading the village of Fairacre. The old cottages are being bought up by outsiders who commute to the big city, and are not much interested in village affairs. The fear of school closure, due to the dwindling number of pupils registered, is causing grave concern. Miss Clare’s health deteriorates, and when she passes away, the villagers and their children mourn.
