Two families set out from Dublin by horse-drawn caravan to start a new life in County Kerry. There is Big Jerry MacSweeney, Mrs Mac, his handsome wife, capable, warm-hearted Janey, their nine-year old daughter, and her friend Eily O'Donnell - dreamy, and taking after her artist father now seeking his fame and fortune in America.
Completing the party are Mrs O'Donnell, Des O'Donnell, clever Aunt Kitty, Barney Murphy, Prancing Peter, the horse himself, and Sweep the kitten. Jerry's optimistic plans are disturbed by a series of adventures - camping on a woodland site said to be haunted, an encounter with a fierce-looking band of tinkers and the disappearance of Prancing Peter himself. The greatest surprise of all, however, is reserved for Eily at the end of the journey.
