Here are twenty-six more stories in Mr. Burgess's new series of Nature Books. They are new stories, so far as book publication is concerned, and they contain many interesting new bits of nature lore. Most of the characters in the stories are familiar, however, including all who walk on the Crooked Little Path that winds through the Green Forest to the Great Mountain. Here too are the ferns and flowers that grow beside it and the trees that shade the path. Buster Bear and Flathorns the Moose meet to argue about whether to sleep or eat in winter.

Peter Rabbit discusses with his cousin Jumper the Hare and Prickly Porky and Mrs. Peter and Whitefoot the Wood Mouse and Mrs. Grouse the surest way of getting into trouble. Little Joe Otter shows Reddy Rox how not to starve, but it is only with the help of South Wind that Lightfoot the Deer and his family get through the winter. Happy Jack Squirrel gives Peter pointers on how to look for signs of spring.

Mr. and Mrs. Hooty and their young owls are less familiar inhabitants of the Green Forest. When Yowler the Bobcat suddenly discovers their nest there is a climax of sharp, fierce struggle. The drawings in...black-and-white for this book, like those for earlier volumes in this new series, are by Harrison Cady.
