Peter lives with his grandfather in Russia. He loves to go into the forest, but he is forbidden to go there in winter it is then that because hungry wolves roam about. Although he has been told that he has to wait until he is old enough to hunt, Peter thinks differently and sets off for the forest with his little wooden gun and a coil of rope, accompanied by his friends Sasha, the bird, Sonia, the duck, and Ivan, the cat.

The tale involves much action and was musically told by Russian composer Serge Prokofieff, representing each character by an instrument in the orchestra. The story was adapted from his musical theme. This version is based on the animated cartoon sequence in Walt Disney's "Make Mine Music."
