Being one of a large family, George had very little education and went to work on a farm at an early age. As a young man he went to Somerset where he met Sarah Ann Watkins, who was born June 1, 1817, the daughter of Richard Watkins and Ruth Hamblin. They were married January 16, 1843. She was more fortunate in regard to education than her husband and after their marriage taught him to read and write. They lived very happily together, although not rich in world's goods. They had 2 children: Robert, born November 5, 1843 and Frederick George, born July 27, 1845.

George Ralph was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints June 10, 185- by John I. Hart and six days later his wife was baptized by her brother, Charles Frederick Watkins. Their greatest desire was to emigrate to Zion. When the boys had a new suit or any new clothing their mother always urged them to take good care of it so that they could look nice when they should go to Zion. The mother's hopes were never realized, for on September 8, 1859, she died at Bristol, England, as a result of injuries received in an accident.

In 1863 George Ralph with his two sons, Robert and Frederick George, crossed the ocean in a sailing vessel and came across the plains to Utah by ox team. They settled in West Weber. After coming to Utah he was advised by friends to marry again but always said he could not find another woman whom he could love as much as his first wife. His son Robert died April 26, 1868 while working on a farm in Plain City. On May 11, 1872 George Ralph died, true to the faith he had accepted and was buried at West Weber, Weber County, Utah.
